LOCKLIGHT 1.0.0: your flashlight is your beacon

Laser tag through your phone's camera. Every flashlight blinks once a second in its own slot of a shared clock; catch it in your reticle, hear the lock build, and tag.

The trick

Laser tag needs a way to tell who you hit. Real blasters use infrared. A web page can't send infrared, so LOCKLIGHT uses the one light a page can control: your flashlight.

Everyone in a room shares one clock, synced over the connection. Each player owns a slot in a one-second cycle, and their torch blinks for a tenth of a second in that slot, once a second. When your camera catches a blink in the reticle, the moment it happened names the player. The same slot a second later confirms it.

That second is the game. The brackets swing toward the blink and tighten while the ticks climb. Then they snap shut, the target's name appears, and the TAG button floods with their colour. On the other phone, a lock warning starts beeping. They have a beat to raise their shield or get out of your sight.

Patches when the light won't do

A torch is hard to see in daylight, and some browsers can't control it. Players can wear a patch instead: a printed code from the game's own print sheet, or any spare screen. Any player can also make the room strobe-free, and nobody is told who asked.

Modes

  • Versus: Duel, Team Battle, Domination (tape node patches to the walls), Juggernaut, Infection and Last Light. Play one match or a best-of-3 or best-of-5 series.
  • Co-op: Swarm, ten waves of drones in the camera, where you revive a teammate by locking their beacon. And the Titan, a raid boss that sits at the same compass bearing for everyone, so the group turns together.
  • Solo: Training, endless Arcade, and the Daily Op: one run a day, the same for the whole country, on a national board.

The Faction War

You join VOLT, EMBER or TIDE. Finished matches and Daily Ops earn Lumens for your faction in your region, and each region shows who holds it this month. The trailing faction in a region earns a quarter more there, so no region stays locked up.

Play it safe

The torch flashes once a second, in white. That is well below the flash rates linked to photosensitive seizures, and strobe-free rooms exist for anyone who wants them. Hold the phone like a camera. Play with people who joined your room, on private ground, never near roads, and never pointed at anyone who isn't playing. The game can only lock onto players in your room: no beacon, no lock.
